A healthy heart for every child
A healthy heart provides a great start to life. That is why our Hearts & Minds Foundation is dedicated to relieving sickness and advancing the health and wellbeing of children and young adults in the UK with congenital heart disease.
What is CHD?
Congenital heart disease (CHD) describes different heart conditions that develop while a baby is in the womb, often due to complications in early development. Family history and other medical conditions are thought to slightly increase the chance of CHD. ‘Heart defects are diagnosed in at least 1 in 150 births – that is an average of 13 babies each day in the UK.’*
CHD can range from a minor problem that can be solved to more serious complications that require specialised medical attention. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for every child to lead a full and active life.
Ultrasound scans during pregnancy are an effective early way to detect CHD; some heart conditions can be successfully treated in the womb. However, it can also be discovered at any time from birth through to adulthood.
There are a range of symptoms to look out for. Some of the most common include rapid heartbeat, breathing problems, extreme tiredness, poor feeding, a blue tinge to the skin or lips and swelling of the legs, tummy or around the eyes. Do not hesitate to seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of these signs in your child.
